Our Approach to Substance Abuse Counseling & Addiction Treatment

We offer both individual and family counseling, as well as couples therapy for one or both partners struggling with addiction, drug and alcohol counseling for teens and adults and sex, internet, porn and gaming addiction help for both adolescents and adults, and, where available, may also suggest psychotherapy groups.

We approach substance abuse counseling and treatment for addiction, in much the same way as we approach other mental health concerns, such as depression and anxiety. We start with accepting you where you are in your life at any given time. We then explore with you your willingness to make changes and what those changes might look like. We’ll explore whether you are simply contemplating a change or are ready to take action. If taking action is where you are, we will help you examine different factors to see what changes you might make. One thing we’ll look at is the way you think about mood-altering substances or other addictive behaviors. We’ll also figure out the role substances and/or addictive behavior have in your life and possible consequences you have experienced as the result of your behaviors. And most importantly, we’ll explore whether you are ready to cut back or stop these behaviors altogether.treatment for addiction

As substance abuse counselors and addictions specialists, our experience in providing treatment for addiction dan substance abuse counseling has taught us that substance abuse and other behavioral addictions (such as sex, gambling, internet, gaming, porn or food addictions) are most often a symptom of underlying issues that have not been resolved. Until these deeper issues are addressed, the coping mechanism of addiction will often resurface. Or, in some cases, if underlying issues are left unresolved, another addiction may develop, even after long periods of sobriety.

Addiction throws your life out of balance. Before long, the vicious cycle begins to consume your life. Addiction and substance abuse can be a very difficult cycle to break. In substance abuse counseling and treatment for addictions, we use such psychotherapy approaches as cognitive-behavioral (CBT), solution focused therapy and motivational interviewing techniques. We will help you examine your thinking, and make healthier choices in order to restore balance. We also may use DBT, EMDR, 12-step, solution focused therapy and other research proven methods to help address the underlying issues to resolve them. Part of that will be to address triggers to reduce use and relapses. We may also engage you in relaxation techniques, mindfulness therapy and visualization exercises, to provide you with a variety of other tools for your own self-care.

If you are using substances, such as alcohol or other drugs, we will assess the frequency and amount of your current use to determine whether you will need medical attention prior to our working together in outpatient substance abuse counseling. If during your assessment, it is determined that you need medical intervention, we will refer you to a local detox center before beginning therapy with you. Once we begin to meet, we may ask you to attempt to cut back or stop altogether to get a feeling of what life will be like without your drug(s) or behavioral addiction of choice. You may be asked to keep a journal of your feelings, thoughts and reactions during that experimental period and we will discuss this in detail during your individual therapy sessions. Making connections with recovery groups in your area or other supports can also be powerful on your road to recovery.substance abuse counseling We will provide you with many resources to find the support you need. Or if we determine that weekly individual therapy sessions will not enough, we may refer you to an intensive outpatient program or possibly an inpatient program.

We believe that information about the addiction process is critical to substance abuse counseling, treatment for addictions and recovery. Therefore, we will provide a great deal of on-going education about how different substances or behaviors when abused, affect your mood and your brain as well as other organs of your body. With many years of experience treating substance abuse, as well as behavioral addictions, we have the expertise to walk with you on your journey of recovery. People who struggle with addiction come from all walks of life and can be some of the strongest, most resilient, resourceful, and amazing people. Overcoming an addiction is one of the most challenging things you may ever do. We help you find that a life in recovery can bring a lasting peace and freedom, and a depth and richness to life, that the “quick fix” behaviors of addiction cannot bring.

We look forward to helping you on your road to recovery.
